Energy and Alternative Energy |
| |
| It is becoming increasingly important in the United
States to explore renewable sources of energy. Indian Country provides some unique possibilities
for developing alternative sources of energy, but any new endeavor in this area must be carefully
assessed with the help of energy experts. |
| |
| New projects are started almost daily to explore
the potential of wind energy generation on many reservations. Because of their geographical setting,
reservations are natural sites for the generation of wind energy that can be sold back to electric grids.
At the same time, however, the remote locations of many reservations make the infrastructure required
to hook- up to power grids prohibitively expensive. Therefore, any decision to develop wind energy
generation needs extensive consideration. |
| |
| Solar energy is another renewable source of energy that
is attracting attention, especially in the West. However, as with wind energy, it is an economic
development option that must be carefully assessed. In some cases, a solar energy system makes more
sense than existing systems that require tribal members to buy very expensive energy from outside sources.
